Book Review: Into Thin Air

I don’t know about you guys, but I love a good natural disaster story. There’s some sort of morbid fascination that comes from watching a horror movie or reading a horror book, especially when it happens to be true. Because at its core, that’s what Into Thin Air is - a horror story. Beautifully written, Krakauer tells his personal account of the events that occurred during the 1996 climbing season, one of the most deadly in history.

Book Review: Lady Smoke

Book two of the Ash Princess series starts us off on the Smoke - notorious pirate Dragonbane's legendary ship. Princess Theodosia and her rag tag group have successfully escaped Astrea, but not quite as smoothly or as to plan as they’d hope. This sequel takes them on their next steps in the long journey towards reclaiming her throne, and getting their country back.

Ready Player One: Book versus Movie (Spoiler Free)

I’ve recently gotten into the strange habit of watching book-to-movies, then going back to read the book. When I do this, it’s because I loved the movie enough to want to learn more, and knew the only way to satisfy my curiosity was to delve into the book, which inevitably would have more information and a deeper story line. The most recent book-to-big-screen that hit my fancy was Ready Player One. I remember the hype back when it hit theaters, and a few friends had recommended, so when the movie came to HBO I gave it a look. THEN, once I was intrigued enough, I cracked open the hard copy.

January Wrap-Up

I can't believe we've already wrapped up the first month of the year! Despite the meme's going around the web making fun of how long this month was (sorry, it wasn't bad if you didn't participate in "dry January"), it went fast for me. As far as reading, I don’t even know what is considered “average” for me, it generally depends on if I’m in school or just how busy I am, but this month I finished three books. Here’s a quick recap of each, and a little mini review. Bring on February!

Miracle: The Most Quotable Movie of All Time

DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES?! YES!!! Guys – Netflix just uploaded a new batch of movies, and included was one of my absolute all time favorites, Miracle. If you haven’t seen it, it’s a docu-drama about the 1980’s US Olympic Ice Hockey team – the team who beat the Soviet Union in a medal round famously dubbed the “Miracle on Ice.” The movie stars Kurt Russell (swoon) as coach Herb Brooks, and includes a slew of other early 2000’s hotties you’ll be sure to recognize. So as I’m watching this movie, and literally shouting quotes at my fiance throughout, I realized it might just be.. for me.. THE most quotable movie. I mean literally, there is something for every situation… just look…

Meet the Blogger

Now that we’re a few weeks into the new year, I thought I’d take a few minutes to tell you all a little bit about me! My name is Megan, but I like to go by my alter ego Basic White Book on social media. I’m 29 years old (30 in two months OMG), and live in Chester County, Pennsylvania. I graduated from the University of Delaware with a degree in Organizational and Community Leadership, and I’m finishing up my MBA at Penn State. I work at Bentley Systems as a Marketing Programs Manager, and I’ve been there for … I can’t believe it… ten years! I started as an intern, and through a lot of twists and turns, found the job for me.

Movie Review: Bird Box

Let’s take a bit of a break from reading to discuss 2019’s first major meme-able movie: Bird Box. Beyond the fact that it’s taken the internet by storm, Bird Box is a science fiction thriller, where a mysterious force has decimated the population. Coming at you in the form of.. well we’re not really sure but in the movie it looks like a darkish cloud… this entity shows a person their worst fears, forcing them to commit suicide. It’s a Netflix original, based on a book by the same name, AND the first funny thing to happy in 2019.
