OH HO back on my bullshit and calling for the non con girlies. First of all, shout out to the internet and my love of book boxes for leading me to Alina May. I followed a box which featured a fav horror author last month, which somehow led me to another one featuring art for Better Run… and man, am I a smut slut for some good art….
(Horror author: Tylor Paige; Book box: Twisted Desires)
Highlights:
Mary Jo doesn’t like to follow the rules, and she doesn’t like to be told what to do. Which is a real problem when she’s kidnapped by two dangerous men who want her to play their games…
Triggers/tropes: um, just read them here: Better Run, Better Hide
What I thought:
This was DARKKK. I mean, it delivers on what it promises. Kidnapping, MFM, murder, non con, then dub con, then back to non con… it really just GOES there. The MMC’s are great. They’re devious, obviously psychotic, but then weirdly endearing at times, and our FMC is a hot mess, but like… a very relatable hot mess. Better Run gets you going right from the beginning and the ending had me a little rattled, I won’t lie!, but heads right into the next book. Better Hide picks up with a one page recap – extra special gifts for all authors who do this – and continues into a non-stop chaotic hellscape of great writing. Literally, I read the second book in one sitting – not even my CBD gummies could tear me away – and enjoyed every second of it.
This book is not romantic… and yet, somehow Alina May had me twisted into thinking it was just that. Just… two damaged boys and a lost girl finding each other. We love a mindf*ck.
P.s. one more gush about the power of social media. I’m a second generation book lover. My Dad got me started and passed on the obsessive need to collect. Recently I was talking to him about how social media connects us so easily to authors, and while I know it’s a lot of extra work for them, as a reader it’s just the coolest thing ever. Case in point – I posted a story after finishing Better Hide, and the author herself messaged me! Just knowing she saw my excitement for her book, acknowledged it, and commented back to me, I mean.. it’s like I met Brad Pitt. My Dad would have DIED to have this kind of interaction “back in his day.” It’s a wild world out there, but it’s not all bad 😉
