What’s this, A SECOND LIGHT BOOK FOR MY BLOG? Yes, that’s right. While I’m absolutely NOT taking a break from the dark stuff, I happen to have read a few lighter reads lately. This one was not actually my choice – BOOK CLUB – but, I did enjoy it nevertheless! It’s been a long while since I read a good historical fiction, and I think this will be another one popular for the masses.
Highlights:
Belle lives on the edge, trying to make a life for herself and her family. She is black passing as white, and a woman thriving in a man’s profession. Will she succeed or will it all come crashing down?
What I thought:
This was a solid read. I’m not going to rant and rave about it like I did with Remarkably Bright Creatures – spoiler alert, there is no hilarious octopus narrator – but it was definitely a good book. I truly felt the pain of our FMC throughout the story. She had to go through so much to hide her identity, to strive for success, and to ensure her and J.P. Morgan’s legacy withstood the test of time. She had so much on her shoulders, I wanted to shout at her to just let it all go. I ALSO wanted to bang the heads of some of the MMC’s against a wall – literally, the audacity of men really does transcend time and space. And in the end, I just wanted to see our lovely Belle find happiness and peace.
I very much enjoyed the academic nature of this read too. It’s one of those books where you finish and really feel a sense of accomplishment. I felt immersed in the art and book world, and transported back in time in a way I haven’t been in some time. If you like historical fiction, and you want something interesting and intriguing without a whole ton of drama, this is the book for you.
