Thrilled, thrilled, thrilled to have been an ARC reader for another Tylor Paige masterpiece, especially since I was super excited for this book. The story goes…. Paige wrote her novella Like Father, Like Slaughter, not thinking it would become popular. It’s a post-apocalyptic story with video game (Bioshock & Fallout) vibes, and therefore a bit different from everything else she’s written. Luckily, her whorror babies, myself included, fell in love and demanded more!
Highlights:
The world has ended – you either live on the surface or in the bunkers, but what happens when the two worlds collide? Well… a lot 🙂
Triggers/tropes: MMF, dark experiments, apocalyptic wasteland, dub con, assault (off page)
What I thought:
OMG this book was so fun. I have always been fascinated with the end of the world. I love disaster movies, dystopian futures, and absolutely anything apocalyptic – guys, I literally was a Christian kid and read Left Behind like it was the Bible itself (#blessings) – so this story was right up my alley. Paige builds two very interesting worlds of surface and bunker life, and then flawlessly brings them together. Our FMC is as lovable as she is hateable (ok maybe more hateable, but that makes us love her more somehow…?), and we’ve got two wildly different MMC’s, each bringing their own fun to the table. Riot is literally a gem, I would die for him, but tbh Cal is such a sweetheart you can’t help falling for him too.
OK AND THEN THERE’S THE ENDING. I won’t spoil it here, because I really really want you guys to read this book, but oh my God the ending was freaking wild. I mean, Paige did NOT have to go that hard, but I’m so glad she did. The whole concept of this story is unhinged, but she just took it from zero to sixty to six hundred million in the span of a few pages. Absolutely adored it, and frankly, I’d like some side stories…. new novella series? Pretty please?!
