You know, guys, the life of a mood reader is real weird. Real. Fucking. Weird.
I come back from a glorious vacation of reading delightfully smutty and fun monster books, and decide it’s a great idea to head into an “after dark” pitch-black book that’s banned on Amazon, whilst simultaneously drowning in an emotionally traumatizing audiobook. Now, to be fair, the dark book I’m about to review has been on my list and I was spurred by the amazing “prime day” sale the author gifted us all with… but still…. it was a wild week. Also TMI, but not sure I recommend any of what I just described if you are PMSing… just trust me.
Highlights:
Ophelia doesn’t exactly have the best home life, but when she finds herself trapped and chained in a basement, she knows things are about to get so much worse…
Triggers: all of them, and then some. I’ll let you read the specifics yourself here.
What I thought:
So, all the above said… I did really like this book! If you are looking for something depraved, this is definitely for you. The MMC is obviously a piece of work, and don’t even get me started on his brother, but it’s almost endearing how he wants to change and grow for the FMC. She’s also messed in the head, traumatized by other monsters in her life, but she doesn’t let him off the hook even to the very end. I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to look at mayonnaise the same way again, though I enjoy finally understanding what everyone in the author’s Facebook group are laughing about now, but not sure that’s a huge loss. Overall, I’m excited to continue Lauren Biel’s “after-dark” series!!
