OK so I have been BLOWING through books, people. IDK what’s going on anymore, and honestly I read this a while ago and can’t believe I forgot to jot down my thoughts *gasps incredulously*
Highlights:
Everyone wants to be Ares. Helen wants it for freedom, independence, and validation, Achilles wants it for power and glory, and honestly, Patroclus just wants to get out of the competition with his relationships and feelings still intact. Too bad no one can have it all… or, can they?
What I thought:
This might have been my favorite story so far! Now, don’t get me wrong, I love a good damsel in distress plot, but that was not this. Helen is FIERCE, and this story is about her and the men who are lucky enough to have found themselves in her presence! Unlike the other Dark Olympus books I’ve read so far, this one centers around a woman truly in charge of herself. Yes, she’s put in a bad position, and yes, the other books also have strong FMC’s, but Helen’s story is one of personal power and glory.
Female empowerment aside, I loved the MMC’s here as well. I thought it was a great perspective having the men in a relationship already and loved the unexpected twist (in their eyes) of them finding a third to round them out. I loved both Patroclus and Achilles in very different ways, and enjoyed watching their dynamic together, separately with Helen, and has a threesome. And as always, the classic Greek mythology Easter eggs were stellar, as well as a few Wicked Villains eggs thrown in.
