How to Stop Time: Review

So, I’m in a book club, two actually, and the infamous Let’s Get CLITerary Club has enacted a January read policy. We call it the “Bill pick,” aka we read whatever book my bibliophile Father gets me for Christmas. Last year was Midnight Library by Matt Haig, and he decided to try for two for two with Haig again this year.

Highlights:
Tom Hazard has lived a long life… like really, really long. He’s experienced, love, loss, extreme highs and lows, adventure, and a never-ending need to find what he once lost. Following him throughout time and back to the present, we find out whether Tom will ever find what he’s looking for or just finally be able to live a “normal” existence.

What I thought:
Trying to be kind, I like to call this a “mild” read. The writing was good and the storyline entertaining enough, but there wasn’t a whole lot of action – actually, compared to my typical read, there was absolutely zero action. The main character was a bit tired, complained every step of the way, and it just didn’t seem like a compelling enough plot. Like.. I’m SURE I’ve seen a movie about this, and not Benedict Cumberbatch’s upcoming adaptation (which I’ll probably skip). The ending was quite rushed, and since I was multitasking while listening, I’m sure I just missed half of it completely. That said – there’s clearly an audience for this genre, I’m just not sure it was me.
